Gangsterism Among School Students

Today we find disciplinary problems and gangsterism among school students. We find young adults breaking laws and many Malaysians generally have a lack of regard and respect for the law.

Although the Ministry of Education viewed the matter seriously and had been seen taking stern action against students involved, steps like expulsion and disciplinary action were not effective or thought students a lesson.

Lately in Kuantan, a Form Three student was kicked by four senior students for not getting drinks while in Kuching a Form Three student was kicked and beaten, including with a kettle, by students still in school uniform in a hostel room.

In Kuala Lumpur, a Form Four student died in hospital after four days in a coma as a result of a vicious beating near his Cheras School due to a tussle over a girlfriend.

Shall we discuss this issue?

  1. I feel this is due to ignorance of the law and also due to the fact that they were not taught about law and as a result do not appreciate the law. One should be taught to appreciate the law before one is expected to obey the law. And the best way to do this is to instill this appreciation and sense of pride and respect for the law since young.....
    is there any other suggestion towards this issue?

  2. Salam to all member's,

    What it's gangsterism mean's? In general we can define the word 'gang' as a group of people's or friend's. But, if talk about 'gangster' it will be a different meaning.Refer to New Oxford Dictionary 'gangster' are group of young people who always cause trouble or a member of a group of criminals. Any other definition please....

    Actually i also agree on what zul ukm defined about gangsterism. It's inappropriate destructive behavior by a group of people. In addition to, it's can be a group of teenagers who break the norms are often being categories as a deviant and delinquent.

    The are often involved in drug addicting, playing truants, shows anger towards small disagreement, participe in illegal motor-racing that call' as mat rempit.

  4. salam,

    There are few more root of the problem that can be discussed here. Bullies have not learned empathy and compassion. They are unable to see other children as having feelings that should be respected. Often, they have not had consistent discipline applied to them at home and have immature social skills. They have difficulty reading social cues and cannot control anger or express feelings. Bullies have often learned to enjoy the power that comes from humiliating others. They have seen others bully and, in most cases, have had it done to themselves in school or at home.

  5. I had mentioned in the shoutbox causes someone to become a gangster. I repeat it again here, therefore everyone can give in your comments as well.

    What causes someone to become a gangster?

    A few factors are responsible and they include:

    * Poor family background

    * Peer influence

    * Media exposure

    * Weak personality trait

    * Antisocial behavior

    * Desiree's / willing to try

  6. zul, i think there are some more fact's to focus:-

    1. Parent's are too busy to look after their children. Currently, too many parents leave their children's education and upbringing to the teacher's. Sadly, teacher' are already overload with their responsibility and some are not exemplary parent's. If they are not good parents to their own children, how can they become parents to a class of at least]50 impressionable children.

    2. Life pressure - Maybe student live under pressure that can cause mental problem. In this case, the student involve in gangsterism must get some advice from psychtiatrist on how to control their emotions and physicalaction.

  7. Back to what gangstarism can be define. According to Thrasher ( 1963 ), it's also defined gang as a group with same characteristics such as appearance, action and planning. As a result of evolution, this group of gang will eventually develop into a group of gangster who always carries out activities that is anti-sosial.

  9. Salam all,

    I've read a news that i've found in the internet which attracted me to add in this topic.. The title of the news is "Help cops fight gangsterism, students urged" . The news which has been published in The Star on 02/02/2008 was stated that secondary school students have been told to help the police fight gangsterism in school. George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said the students could help by looking out for signs of gangterism and report such activities to the school authorities and the police.In conjunction of co-launching a crime prevention campaign with Jelutong MP Datuk Lee Kah Choon organised by Penang Free School's Parent-Teacher Association. In his speeach ,Datuk Lee Kah Choon encouraged students to join uniform bodies to keep up the tradition of serving the people instead of falling prey to social ills.” We hear of so many youths these days having no vision in life, but you would be trained to set meaningful goals in your life in the uniform bodies,” he said while relating his past experiences.He also urged schools and non-governmental organizations to carry out more programmes to keep young boys away from criminal activities.
